The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ancient.eu\/Silk_Road\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">craze for silk in ancient Rome<\/a>\u00a0helped spawn\u00a0the Silk Road, a fashion for feathered hats <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/refuge\/pelican_island\/about\/history.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">contributed to the first National Wildlife Refuges<\/a>. Fashion has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/science-nature\/how-tuberculosis-shaped-victorian-fashion-180959029\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">even been wrapped up in pandemics and infectious diseases.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"associated-container\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph2\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Stories like these\u2014as well as a healthy dose of the glitz and glamour\u2014makes up the new Google virtual experience project <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/culturalinstitute\/beta\/project\/fashion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cWe Wear Culture: The Stories Behind What We Wear.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph3\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The massive site is a collaboration between the tech giant and more than 180 partner companies and institutions in 42 countries including the Costume Institute at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Kyoto Costume Institute and Victoria and Albert Museum. Digital exhibits include images of 30,000 artifacts, including 700 ultra high-resolution gigapixel images, over 450 curated exhibits, four\u00a0VR experiences as well as six Google expeditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph4\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWe invite everyone to browse the exhibition on their phones or laptops and learn about the stories behind what you wear,\u201d Amit Sood, director of Google Arts and Culture tells <a href=\"http:\/\/www.business-standard.com\/article\/current-affairs\/patola-temple-and-ikat-sarees-part-of-google-s-we-wear-culture-project-117060800664_1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Press Trust of India<\/a>. \u201cYou might be surprised to find out that your Saree, jeans or the black dress in your wardrobe have a centuries-old story. What you wear is true culture and more often than not a piece of art.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"InArticle_300x50_320x50_300x250\" class=\"cbv-ad\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph5\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">It\u2019s hard to grasp the mass of information on the site. There are extensive profiles of designers like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/culturalinstitute\/beta\/exhibit\/7QKCy_v7yDpuIg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Coco Chanel<\/a> and haute couture master <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/culturalinstitute\/beta\/exhibit\/VALimB4lq04sLg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Crist\u00f3bal Balenciaga<\/a> as well as style icons like Anna Wintour, Marilyn Monroe and Frida Kahlo. There are discussions of Truman Capote\u2019s legendary black-and-white dance in the\u00a0Plaza&#8217;s Grand Ballroom\u00a0and 18th-century European dresses. There are articles on the making of Romanian body coats and artisan Korean vests. There\u2019s a huge section on the intersection of fashion and the arts, like costuming the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/culturalinstitute\/beta\/exhibit\/QRKX0Dhf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bolshoi Theater<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/culturalinstitute\/beta\/exhibit\/dgJSBH0gcvnHJQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bollywood Fashion<\/a>. And that\u2019s just a taste of the collection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph6\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessoffashion.com\/articles\/digital-scorecard\/why-is-google-digitising-the-worlds-fashion-archives\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vikram Alexei Kansara at <em>Business of Fashion<\/em><\/a> explains that the project is an offshoot of Google\u2019s \u201c20 percent time\u201d initiative, in which it allows employees to spend 20 percent of their time working on a personal project. Back on 2010, an engineer named Amit Sood came up with the idea of using his free time to start digitizing the world\u2019s cultural artifacts and museums. That morphed into the non-profit Paris-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/culturalinstitute\/beta\/\">Google Cultural Institute<\/a>, which is working on digitizing items from 1,300 institutions. The Institute decided to tackle fashion as its next topic after noticing\u00a0the volume of searches relating to the industry\u00a0on Google.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph7\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWe wanted to show that fashion is much deeper than just what you wear; that there\u2019s a story behind it, there\u2019s people behind it, there\u2019s influences that come from art, that come from music, that come from culture more broadly; and, in turn, what we wear influences culture,\u201d project leader Kate Lauterbach tells Kansara. \u201cWe really wanted to put fashion on a par with art and artists.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph8\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Though Google is massive, it didn\u2019t put the materials together on its own. Instead, it has digitized the work already done by the institutions. For instance,\u00a0the Victoria &amp; Albert Museum has one of the greatest fashion collections in the world spanning five centuries, <a href=\"https:\/\/fashionunited.uk\/news\/culture\/victoria-and-albert-museum-collaborates-with-google\/2017060824765\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a press release<\/a>\u00a0notes. The museum not only created eight online exhibitions specifically for the project, it also allowed Google to take gigapixel images of some of its most-prized possessions including an 18th-century Dragon Robe worn by a Qing Dynasty Emperor and a 1937 Elsa Schiaparelli evening coat.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"InArticle_728x90_300x250_2\" class=\"cbv-ad\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph9\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Fair warning: for the fashion-minded and history buffs &#8220;We Wear Culture&#8221; is a true rabbit hole.
