There have been approximately 30,000 guests, 400 photographers, 500 volunteers and too many bloggers to count. And after the shows, it\u2019s still not quite over yet: there\u2019s a day of fashion seminars to go.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"content__article-body from-content-api js-article__body\" style=\"word-wrap: break-word; position: relative; clear: both; color: #333333; font-family: 'Guardian Text Egyptian Web', Georgia, serif; font-variant-ligatures: common-ligatures; background-color: #ffffff;\" data-test-id=\"article-review-body\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1rem; padding: 0px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 25pt;\">Fashion is a booming industry in Australia, the luxury sector alone is worth in excess of $2bn in annual revenue and one model on the runway this year, Jordan Barrett, is said to be earning $100,000 for a minute\u2019s work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1rem; padding: 0px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 25pt;\">\u201cWe\u2019re growing as a nation that wants to dress better and be more fashion conscious,\u201d says Jordan Stenmark, one half of the Stenmark twins, Australia\u2019s most recognizable male models. \u201cAnd even though there might only be something like 24 million of us, there\u2019s so much talent out here. So you\u2019ve got to celebrate what\u2019s being done back home.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1rem; padding: 0px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\">The twins attended the opening show by Dion Lee at Sydney Opera House on Sunday afternoon \u2013 Lee was making his fourth appearance\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline in-body-link--immersive\" style=\"background: transparent; touch-action: manipulation; color: #000000; cursor: pointer; border-bottom: 0.0625rem solid #dcdcdc; transition: border-color 0.15s ease-out;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/2017\/may\/15\/dion-lees-show-echoes-opera-house-at-opening-of-australian-fashion-week\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">at the venue whose geometric form has so inspired him<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 and were impressed by his colorful collection featuring sliced Akubra hats and oversized jackets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1rem; padding: 0px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cI thought the Dion Lee show was fantastic. He\u2019s such a talented designer because he plays with textures and cuts really well. He\u2019s been able to own that. Just because you can\u2019t own a painting doesn\u2019t mean you can\u2019t still see it and enjoy it,\u201d he says. \u201cMy favorite brand, Comme des Gar\u00e7ons, it\u2019s way out of my price range but I absolutely still love it regardless because it\u2019s one of those brands that shows the world what you can do with clothes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1rem; padding: 0px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 25pt;\">\u201cClothing originally came from a more utilitarian background but with fashion it\u2019s a celebration of creativity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1rem; padding: 0px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 25pt;\">Backstage, 20 year-old model Akiima Ajak is taking a quick lunch break. She\u2019s booked to walk in so many shows she can scarcely keep track. \u201cSass and Bide, We Are Kindred, Dion Lee,\u201d she says, pausing to consult her phone. \u201cAlice Macall, Magraw, too many to remember. I did four yesterday, four today, one Sunday. Some days you wake up and you\u2019re so excited, some days you\u2019re tired. Normally you watch TV and you see the pretty stuff but you never see backstage. I didn\u2019t think about how the hair and make-up would take hours to get ready for a five minute show. And I\u2019m lucky \u2013 I don\u2019t have much hair.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1rem; padding: 0px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 25pt;\">While Ajak\u2019s career is just beginning, fellow model Raenee Sydney, one of the most memorable faces from fashion week 2016 thanks to her electric-blue hair, has reservations about continuing hers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1rem; padding: 0px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cThis time last year I flew to LA to shoot Calvin Klein and that was a phenomenal experience but at the same time modeling can make you feel like total shit,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1rem; padding: 0px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 25pt;\">\u201cLast year I went to a casting and waited at the fitting for six hours and then I tried on every outfit and got dropped at the last minute. It makes you question yourself. Am I not good enough? She gathers herself and continues her walk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1rem; padding: 0px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 25pt;\">\u201cYou do have that thought in the back of head of \u2018don\u2019t stuff up, don\u2019t slip, don\u2019t trip\u2019,\u201d says Sydney. \u201cIt\u2019s hard trying to keep your balance and your walk right. It looks easy but you have to have a certain look to it. You\u2019ve got to be a bit staunch and not sloppy. It\u2019s really methodical: left, right, left, right, with a bit of hip swing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1rem; padding: 0px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 25pt;\">\u201cA lot of the designers tell you what look to have or how to showcase yourself. It\u2019s a very obvious spectacle and you can get swept up in the excitement, but if you had to break it down it\u2019s basically a sales presentation,\u201d she says. \u201cBecause what\u2019s the point of being a designer if no-one wants to wear your clothes? Is it just art or is it art that people wear?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1rem; padding: 0px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 25pt;\">Like Quan, veteran designer Arika is similarly cursed by creases in the lead up to his show and has surrounded himself by a team of steamers in bid to resolve the matter. However, so much power is needed that they fuse the powerboard and there\u2019s a sudden electrical outage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1rem; padding: 0px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 25pt;\">Akira seems remarkably unruffled. They\u2019re definitely setting the agenda.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1rem; padding: 0px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 25pt;\">On the eve of the final show by Romance Was Born, themselves a good example of Akira\u2019s point, the queue for a spot on the riser begins more than an hour before the official start time.
