On the \u201cFirst Monday in May\u201d the Met Gala kicked off\u00a0the opening\u00a0of the 2017 Spring exhibit with a star-studded gala held at the Met Museum. The Costume Institute, which is housed in the museum, has chosen to\u00a0showcase the work of Japanese fashion designer and artist <strong>Rei Kawakubo<\/strong>. This talented designer is well known\u00a0for one-of-a-kind great designs and often challenges the predictable notions of good taste, beauty and fashion. Her fashion label, <strong>Comme des Gar\u00e7ons<\/strong>, is truly the convergence\u00a0of\u00a0art and fashion. She creates unique and avant-garde\u00a0designs which instantly catch your eye and you are left wondering where she draws her inspiration from.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; line-height: 21pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/fashiondevelopmentgroup.com\/objectsubjectgalleryview\/\"><span class=\"pibfi_pinterest \"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10425 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/fashiondevelopmentgroup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/ObjectSubjectGalleryView.jpg?resize=495%2C330\" sizes=\"(max-width: 495px) 100vw, 495px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/fashiondevelopmentgroup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/ObjectSubjectGalleryView.jpg?w=495 495w, https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/fashiondevelopmentgroup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/ObjectSubjectGalleryView.jpg?resize=300%2C200 300w\" alt=\"Rei Kawakubo\" width=\"495\" height=\"330\" \/><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; line-height: 21pt;\">The exhibit features 140 designs that date from the early 1980s to her most recent collections. The Costume Institute has not done a monographic show on a living designer since the Yves Saint Laurent exhibition in 1983, so you can expect this one to be a huge success and draw large crowds and long lines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; line-height: 21pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/fashiondevelopmentgroup.com\/thennowgalleryview\/\"><span class=\"pibfi_pinterest \"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10426 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fashiondevelopmentgroup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/ThenNowGalleryView.jpg?resize=495%2C330\" sizes=\"(max-width: 495px) 100vw, 495px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fashiondevelopmentgroup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/ThenNowGalleryView.jpg?w=495 495w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fashiondevelopmentgroup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/ThenNowGalleryView.jpg?resize=300%2C200 300w\" alt=\"Rei Kawakubo\" width=\"495\" height=\"330\" \/><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; line-height: 21pt;\">When Anna Wintour, artistic director for Cond\u00e9 Nast, was asked about the designer at the Met Gala she replied \u201c<em>Rei not only thinks outside the box, she discards the box all together<\/em>\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; line-height: 21pt;\">Rei Kawakubo fuses\u00a0art and fashion together to produce something extraordinary. She makes us think differently about clothing. When you first see her collection, it literally looks like a sculpture in an exhibition and it certainly challenges our ideas about the role of fashion in contemporary culture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; line-height: 21pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/fashiondevelopmentgroup.com\/galleryview\/\"><span class=\"pibfi_pinterest \"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10422 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/fashiondevelopmentgroup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/GalleryView.jpg?resize=494%2C330\" sizes=\"(max-width: 494px) 100vw, 494px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/fashiondevelopmentgroup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/GalleryView.jpg?w=494 494w, https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/fashiondevelopmentgroup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/GalleryView.jpg?resize=300%2C200 300w\" alt=\"Rei Kawakubo\" width=\"494\" height=\"330\" \/><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; line-height: 21pt;\">Rei is definitely one of the most powerful and inspiring designers of the past 40 years and she invites us to rethink fashion as something that requires continuous creation, recreation and hybridity. The objects are organized into nine different aesthetic expressions of relation in the designers work: Design\/Not Design, Object\/Subject, Absence\/Presence, High\/Low, Fashion\/Anti-Fashion, Clothes\/Not Clothes, Model\/Multiple, Self\/Other and Then\/Now. She takes down the imaginary walls between these contrasts and exposes their uncertainty and artificiality.
